LOS ANGELES- LMU junior Connor Campbell finished each round of his first NCAA Regional appearance on the up swing, a trend that sets the tone for his senior season and that of the LMU golf program heading into next fall.
Campbell shot a final round 73 to finish with a three-round total of 222 at the NCAA San Diego Regional hosted at the Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. He moved up six spots in the final standings to finish in a tie for 29th out of 75 golfers.
"My experience at regionals was amazing, coach and I were talking about how just being there was a reward for the hard work that I had put in over the course of the year," said Campbell. "I didn't have my best game and my scores reflected that but I battled to hang in there and do my best with the game that I had."
Campbell moved up 15 spots over the final two rounds, shooting a 76 in the opening round and a 73 in round two. The move up the leader board is a trend he and the Lions had throughout the 2014-15 season, one that has their goals set high heading into 2015-16.
"Going into next year there is nothing but positive vibes for the team and myself. I had a taste of what the post season feels like and I hope to be back there with the team and hopefully moving on to the national championships," said Campbell. "The NCAA Championships in Oregon is my goal for the my last year and that's what I and this team will be working towards all summer and next year."
The Lions had no seniors on the 2014-15 squad and return a squad that suddenly has a lot of experience, led by Campbell.
"Connor had a performance he can be proud of as he managed himself well, and made the most of his opportunity to play himself into the NCAA Championship," said Head Coach Brad Lanning. "If it were not for a couple costly misses on tough holes, he would have been right there to qualify at the end. I believe the experience Connor and our team gained this year will serve us well next season. We are excited for the future of our program."
The Lions 2015 Fall Schedule will begin at the Saint Mary's Invitational on Sept. 13-15.
