Playing as the #10 seed, LMU women's tennis (5-19) upended seventh-seed Santa Clara (7-12), 4-3, in the first round of the 2015 WCC Tennis Championship being played at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. on Wednesday morning.

With the victory, LMU will advance to play second-seed Portland on Thursday at 9 a.m.

The Lions won a crucial doubles point in a very tightly-contested match. Jessica Perez and Anna Romeka were the first off the courts with an 8-2 victory at #2 for LMU, but Santa Clara managed to even the tally at 1-1 with an 8-3 decision at the top spot. With the doubles point hinging on court three, Julia Norlin and Andrea Crespo outlasted Zeina El Tawil and Riley Morgan, 8-7 (4) to take the point.

Ellie Grossman handed LMU a 2-0 match lead with her singles victory on court five, defeating Danielle Zinn in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Santa Clara refused to surrender easily on Wednesday, winning the next two singles matches to even the score at 2-2.

With three courts yet to be decided, LMU received a victory at #1 singles when Perez bested Nabila Farah, 6-3, 6-2, to reclaim LMU's lead at 3-2. The final two matches went to three sets, as Santa Clara stayed alive by way of Chelby Cooke's 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Crespo at #2 singles.

With all eyes turned toward the deciding point on court three, Romeka topped Daniella Silva in comeback fashion, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to send LMU to the next round.
