The LMU baseball team (22-15) walked off with an 8-7 victory over UNLV (15-20) on Tuesday night at LMU's Page Stadium. Ryan Erickson contributed the walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth, laying down a perfect squeeze bunt with the bases loaded and one out to leave an opponent on the field for the third time this year. LMU's other two walk-off victories came on 3/14 vs. Santa Clara (6-5 in 10) and 3/27 vs. Gonzaga (6-5 in 10).
Tanner Donnels, who went 2-for-5 on the night, got the ninth inning going with his second double of the game before Jimmy Jack sacrificed the runner to third. UNLV elected to walk the next two hitters to load the bases and set up double play opportunities, but Erickson bunted on the second pitch of the at bat to hand LMU victory.
In addition to Donnels, sophomore Austin Miller and senior Chris Barnett also collected a pair of hits. Miller scored three times out of the leadoff spot, while Barnett came in twice. Sophomore David Fletcher had just one hit, but he was productive all night, collecting a walk and three RBI.
The Lions trailed 5-0 early as the Rebels got to LMU starter Brenton Arriaga for five runs in the third. The left-hander ultimately earned a no decision after tossing the first 2.2 innings and allowing the five runs on six hits and two walks. Freshmen Tylor Megill and Cory Abbott were the first to appear out of the bullpen, with Abbott throwing 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. Junior Michael Silva finished the game and got the victory, throwing 2.0 innings and striking out two while improving to 3-1 on the year.
Left-hander Corey Wilson allowed the winning run and was tagged with the loss for UNLV, falling to 1-1 with the decision.
Trailing 5-0 headed to the bottom of the third, LMU erased the deficit with three in the third and two more in the fifth. A sacrifice fly from Billy Wilson and an RBI-single from Fletcher highlighted the third inning before Fletcher cashed in with an RBI-groundout in front of a two-out RBI-double from Donnels to tie the game in the fifth.
Both teams plated a pair of runs in the sixth as an RBI-double from Joey Armstrong and a run-scoring single from Erik VanMeetren put the Rebels on top 7-5. The Lions punched right back in the home-half, scoring one run on a throwing error charged to right fielder Edgar Montes and the equalizer on another RBI-groundout from Fletcher.
The Lions had a good opportunity to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth after getting runners at first and second with nobody out, but UNLV escaped the jam only to have the Lions win it in the ninth.
LMU will return to action on Friday when it opens a three-game West Coast Conference series with Pacific at 6 p.m.
