Sophomore Brenton Arriaga tossed seven shutout innings as LMU (17-12) held on for a 1-0 shutout victory at Grand Canyon (15-14) on Tuesday from Brazell Stadium. Arriaga surrendered five two-out hits in the game, but retired 15 straight from the end of the second through two out in the seventh. He did not walk a batter and struck out one while improving to 2-2 on the season and handing LMU its third shutout of the season.
The Lions turned the ball over to their setup and closer in the eighth and ninth, as Michael Silva threw a scoreless frame before J.D. Busfield converted his ninth save in as many attempts with a scoreless ninth inning. LMU, which played fantastic defense throughout the game, turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
After GCU starter Cameron Brendel walked one over four hitless and shutout innings, the Lopes called to the bullpen in the fifth. LMU capitalized on two Grand Canyon mistakes in that frame en route to scoring its lone run off of Jake Repavich. The freshman lefty allowed a one-out single to Jimmy Jack to break up the no-hit bid before an error charged to third baseman Ben Mauseth allowed runners to move to first and second. A wild pitch followed, setting the table for a sacrifice fly from Arizona native Billy Wilson to hand LMU the only run it would need on Tuesday.
The Lions, who posted six hits and stranded eight runners, received two hits from David Fletcher out of the second spot in the order. The native of Cypress, Calif. now owns a seven-game hit streak and has collected seven multi-hit games over his last 12 overall.
LMU will return to action on Thursday when it opens a three-game WCC series at Saint Mary's at 3 p.m.
