BOISE, Idaho - LMU men's basketball suffered a heartbreaking 67-66 setback to Boise State on Wednesday night at the Taco Bell Arena in Bosie, Idaho. The game featured 12 ties and 12 lead changes, including the final tie and change with 12.7 seconds left that lifted the Broncos (6-4) to the come-from-behind win over the Lions (6-4).
Junior Shamar Johnson hit two free throws with 2:04 to play and then after a steal by Johnson on the other end, Steven Haney cleaned up an offensive rebound and scored a lay-in with 1:47 to play to give the Lions a 66-62 lead.
Boise State's Montigo Alford hit two free throws with 52 seconds to cut the lead to a pair.
On the next offensive possession, Brandon Brown drove the baseline at the end of the shot clock. He appeared to be fouled on the play but was called for stepping out of bounds first. On the next possession, Mikey Thompson drove the lane and Jeffery McClendon moved in to take a charge. He was called for a block, Thompson's floater went in to tie the game. He then hit the free throw, the Broncos 20th of the game, to give them the lead.
Brown's three-pointer at then buzzer was off the mark. The Lions were called for a foul with 0.2 seconds left. The Broncos intentionally missed both free throws for the final margin.
"We have to continue to learn how to win the road," said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. "It can be a very painful process, as evident by tonight. We have to keep moving forward. A lot more positives came out of this game. It is a frustrating result, but a lot of good came out of tonight's game."
It was a defensive battle throughout. Boise State finished 20-for-29 from the free throw line while the Lions went 5-for-7. LMU hit eight more field goals, going 27-for-67 (40.3 percent) while Boise State went 19-for-47 (40.4 percent). The Lions out rebounded the Broncos 39-32 and finished with 12 turnovers to 13 for Boise State.
"We played great defense in the second half," said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. The Lions held Boise State to 33 percent shooting in the second frame. "Free throws, the disparity between them, was once again an issue. We have to get to the line. And when we do, we have to make them. We had a couple key misses."
Jacko led the Lions with his second double-double of the season with 12 points , 14 rebounds and four blocks before fouling out. The junior Brown had 19 points, four rebounds and three assists to lead the Lions. Sophomore Steven Haney added 16 points. James Webb III led four Broncos in double figures with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lions are back on the road with a return trip to Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 6 pm. The game can be heard on KXLU 88.9 FM.
