LOS ANGELES - A plus-20 edge in free throws proved huge as LMU men's basketball could not hold their first half lead and fell down the stretch at Colorado State, 83-75, on Thursday night at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo.
The Lions finished with 30 fouls to just 14 for Colorado State (2-0), which led to the Rams going 32-for-42 from the free throw line. The Lions (1-2) went 12-for-16.
"Welcome to the road," said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. "We have to learn how not to foul on the road. They were a plus-20 on the free throw line and we just can't overcome that. We played an NCAA tournament team toe-to-toe and we had a lot of positives from this game."
Brandon Brown led all scorers with 24 points, hitting 8-for-16 from the floor. The Lions had a balanced attack early as Marin Mornar added 11 points while Jeffery McClendon and Buay Tuach had nine each.
Cain Clavell led the Rams with 21 points.
The Lions finished the game with just eight turnovers and held an 18-8 edge in points off turnovers. They also finished with eight steals. However, the Rams held a 40-27 edge on the glass.
"Our four and five were in foul trouble all night long," said Dunlap. "Despite that, we were within three with under four minutes to play and we were right there. We did a lot of growing tonight and have a lot to be positive about."
The Lions led by as many as nine in the first half thanks to 51.7 percent shooting in the first frame, their best effort of the young season. Brown's lay-in at the buzzer gave them a 37-34 lead at the break.
The Lions held on to a five-point edge, 43-38 on a Jacko dunk at 17:23 to play. However, the Rams would go on an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the sec on half. With the game tied at 48-48, the Rams went on another run, this time 11-1 to take a 10-point lead.
LMU managed to cut it to 75-72 with 3:53 to play on a Brown three-pointer. They would get no closer.
LMU returns home for Alumni Family Day at the Game on Sunday, Nov. 22 when they host Antelope Valley at 3 pm. The Family Tailgate party starts at 1 pm.
