SACRAMENTO - Both the LMU men's and women's cross country teams placed a trio of individuals in their respective top-10s, leading to a first place team finish for the women and a runner-up finish for the men at the Capital Cross Challenge hosted by Sacramento State at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex Saturday morning.

The team victory was the second straight for the women, who also won the team title two weeks ago at the Mustang Challenge. The trio of Kayla de Bondt, Danielle Shanahan and Kelli Capel placed second, third and fourth, respectively, among collegiate scoring runners. de Bondt and Shanahan were neck-and-neck, finishing the 5k course in 16:45.6 and 16:47.4, respectively. Capel crossed the finish line in an even 17:00.0.

Also scoring for the women were freshman Emily Hubert, who placed 14th overall in 17:31.5, and senior Chloe Curtis, who took 16th in 17:34.3. The five top-20 finishers gave LMU a team score of 39 to easily top runner up Cal (51 points).

The remaining competing Lion women included Lorena Garcia in 27th place overall in 18:02.3, Samantha Garcia in 31st place (18:06.6), Elena Garcia in 32nd (18:10.0) and Maddi Vorgitch in 35th (18:12.5).

The men's team was edged by four points in the overall standings as West Coast Conference rival Saint Mary's took first with 48 points to the Lions 52. However, it was another overall solid showing for the young LMU squad. Junior Brandon Vientos placed second overall on the 8k course in 24:49.4 and was followed closely by freshman Koby Pederson, who took third place in 24:50.6.

Senior Lance Capel placed eighth in 25:06.2, freshman Branden Estrada was 16th in 25:19.4 and senior Michael Duncan was 23rd in 25:33.0 to round out the five-scoring Lion men.

Christopher Fredlund placed 24th in 25:34.5, Brian Joerger was 25th in 25:35.5, Grant Lapovich was 29th in 25:49.1, Harry Loasby was 31st in 26:01.4 and Alex Sasser was 36th in 26:09.9.

Two meets remain on LMU's schedule prior to the 2015 WCC Championships on Nov. 1. Next up for the Lions is the Bronco Invitational, hosted by Santa Clara on Saturday, Oct. 17.
