LOS ANGELES - For the 10th time since 1982, a match between LMU men's soccer and Santa Clara extended into extra time. The Lions move to 3-3-3 overall with the result while the Broncos now sit at 4-3-2 on the year.
A slow, defensive battle set in early as the teams' combined for just eight first-half shots, four on frame. Santa Clara would strike first as Carlos Delgadillo slipped a ball forward into the box for Maz Ornstil who slotted a shot past LMU goalkeeper Paul Blanchette for the 1-0 Santa Clara lead in the 16th minute.
The Bronco goal would stand until the 81st minute when Alvaro Madrigal was taken down at the top edge of the box, drawing a penalty kick opportunity for the Lions. Craig Nitti would take, and convert, his second straight PK for LMU, evening the score at 1-1.
Each team had a solid chance in the first overtime period, the first just two minutes in. SCU's Delgadillo earned a breakaway opportunity, finding himself one-on-one with Blanchette. But the Bronco sent his shot right at Blanchette, who body blocked the ball, preserving the tie score.
Just over a minute later Perez launched a 25-yard shot that lined just over the SCU crossbar. LMU finished the 110-minute match with a 16-7 shot advantage and 11-2 edge in corner kick chances. Blanchette finished with three saves while the Broncos' Kendall McIntosh came up with five.
The Lions hit the road for their next two matches, beginning with a trip to San Francisco on Sunday. Kick off against the Dons is scheduled for 2 p.m.
