SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- In the second round of the WCC Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center, the No. 7 seeded LMU women's tennis team fell 4-2 the No. 3 seeded Santa Clara Broncos. After upsetting BYU Wednesday, the Lions ran out of steam on Thursday.
In doubles play, the Broncos secured the point quickly, winning on Courts 2 and 3 to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles, where they would need just three wins to advance to the semifinals Friday.
In singles play, the Lions tied things up early with a 6-4, 6-1 win on Court 4, thanks to Kristine Kouyoumjian. Claudia Razzeto would get a second point for LMU with a 6-3, 6-1 win on Court 3. But Santa Clara would win on Courts 1, 5, and 6 to seal the team victory.
The Broncos got the better of the Lions earlier in the season as well, when Santa Clara won 5-2 at LMU in the first week of conference play. Santa Clara was also the same team to defeat the Lions in the second round a year ago.
This marks the end to a strong season for women's tennis, a year in which the team earned the first national ranking since 2007, as well as many other individual accomplishments.
