Lions Complete Bay Area Sweep With 4-3 Victory

April 1, 2012

Results

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The Lions improved to 2-1 in the WCC with a win over Santa Clara. LMU (5-11, 2-1 WCC) came back after dropping a 3-1, winning the final singles match for a 4-3 victory over the Broncos (8-7, 2-2 WCC). The match was rescheduled to Sunday because of rain in the area on Saturday.

The Lions struggled in the doubles round losing two of the three matches. "We have worked on improving in doubles and we will continue to work hard," said head coach Jamie Sanchez. He commented, "Although we were not very good today, we will continue to improve."

The only victory for the Lions in doubles was at court three, where April Bisharat and Claudia Razzeto gained an 8-5 victory.

LMU began the singles competition with a quick win to tie the match at 1-1. Tory Parravi got a 6-1, 6-1 win for the Lions' second point. Claudia Razzeto won LMU's third point with a singles win. Then the Lions dropped the next two singles contests.

With the match tied at 3-3, LMU's chances at winning the match came down to senior Ashley Anderson who dropped the second set of her match just when the overall match tied. Anderson rallied to win the third set giving the Lions a well-earned 4-3 victory over a team predicted to finish ahead of them in the WCC preseason coaches' poll.

"We showed how strong we are in singles," said Sanchez. "Despite the struggles we've had in doubles, we battled and made comebacks in the singles. Our ability to battle back and persevere will suit us well in upcoming matches, particularly in conference play as we've already shook up the standings."

The Lions return to Los Angeles after a successful sweep through northern California for two WCC home matches next week. Saint Mary's comes to the LMU Tennis Center Wednesday, Apr. 4 at 1:30 pm., followed by San Diego Saturday, Apr. 7 at 1:30 p.m. as well.
