LOS ANGELES - LMU women's tennis has made adjustments to its doubles partnerships throughout the season due to injuries and unsatisfactory results. The changes have pushed the team in the right direction and lead to a sweep over Cal State Fullerton 7-0 giving the Lions wins in its last two home matches. The Titans (5-4) only won one set in the match.
Head coach Jamie Sanchez was pleased with the result. He described his team as "ready to play and very sharp." With regards to changes in the doubles partnerships Sanchez commented, "we're finding the right pairings." The combinations have lead the Lions to better starts in recent matches.
The doubles round saw a sweep by LMU (3-8). April Bisharat and Claudia Razzeto were the first team to finish, defeating Jessica Pepa and Avriel Tomaiko 8-1 on court three. Bisharat gained her first doubles win of the season with Razzeto gaining her third, her first without regular partner Miya Jin. Ashley Anderson and Tory Parravi won their fifth consecutive match beating Slevcove/Rodriguez 8-4. The win was the duos' first at No. 2 doubles, extending an impressive streak in which they haven't surrendered more than five games in a match.
After the doubles point was decided, Elisaveta Pironkova and Reka Rohonyi were victorious on court one. The pair won 8-4 over Mai/McIntosh for their first doubles win of the season. Recent improvements in doubles play finally resulted in a sweep for the Lions, giving them a point heading into the singles competition.
In singles, Tory Parravi extended her singles winning streak to three matches with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Monica Rodriguez. Team captain Elisaveta Pironkova defeated Avriel Tomaiko on court five 6-1, 6-1. Ashley Anderson wrapped up the Lions win with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Kalika Slevcove, her first singles win of the season.
Sophomore Reka Rohonyi got her third singles victory of the year with a 6-1, 6-2 win on court five over Malorie de la Cruz. Claudia Razzeto won in No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-4 over Morgan McIntosh. In No. 1 singles, April Bisharat won 6-4, 5-7, 7-3 over Tiffany Mai, with the third set decided by tiebreaker.
The Lions are back in action Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. against Furman University at the LMU Tennis Center. Coach Sanchez anticipates a tough match with the Paladins. "We're ready for this. These are matches we've been priming for as we get better and better through the season," said Sanchez.
