LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Rutger's Stefanee Pace headed in a rebound off the post 50 seconds into the second overtime to lift the Scarlet Knights over LMU, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Sullivan Field.
The Lions (3-1-1) had erased an early 1-0 deficit to force overtime. However, Rutgers (3-1-0) took advantage of starting the second overtime and Jasmine Edwards ripped a shot from the top right of the box that rebounded off the left post to the waiting Pace. She then headed the ball in to right of the diving Brittany Jagger.
Rutgers got on the board first when Jonelle Filigno put a shot on LMU goalie Brittany Jagger and the sophomore could not get the handle. Amy Pietrangelo took advantage, knocking in the rebound at 16:24 for the early lead.
Rutgers controlled most of the first half, ending the frame with a 7-3 edge on shots. Filigno had another chance in the 33rd minute with a header that Jagger saved diving right to left. The Lions had a chance on a throw-in in the 36th minute as Emily Maletis lined-up a header, but it sailed wide left.
Rutgers look to come out the aggressor once again in the second half on back-to-back shots by Stefanie Scholz. The second would result in a save by Jagger.
Then in 57th minute Tawni Martino would finally break free down the left side. Her service would hit Etajha Gilmer in stride and she would bury it on one bounce to tie it at 1-1.
LMU gained momentum from there. A minute later Martino would have another opportunity, but her shot would be wide. In the 61st minute Brianne Medved put a shot on net that was saved by Rutgers goalie Emmy Simpkins. The Lions kept pushing. In the 72nd minute Cori McGovern lined up a shot from about 22 yards and ripped a shot that would skip off the top of the cross bar.
The game would head into overtime and the Lions had the first chance. In the 92nd minute Marissa Zamora delivered a cross form left to right and Linda Bakker caught Simpkins moving the wrong way. Bakker's shot, however, would go off the same left post as Pace's winner.
Rutgers finished the game with a 20-11 edge in shots, forcing Jagger to make six saves. Simpkins had five saves for Rutgers.
LMU will conclude a four-game homestand when they face Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 1 p.m.
