Track Sets Sights on Cal/Nevada Championships

March 25, 2011

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - After clocking all time bests and personal records last weekend at the UC Irvine Invite, the Lions have shown no signs of slowing down. The Lions will take on the competition at the Cal-Nevada Championships in Claremont, Calif. this Saturday. The Lions will be competing in the 1500m, 5000m and 3000m distances.

For the women, Brieanna Delaney, Jessica Mumaugh, Caroline Draper and Brittnie Munoz will all take the track again for their second 5k of the season. All four women clocked personal bests this past weekend racing together in the 3k at Irvine. After another week of training, they should be a solid pack in a competitive 5k heat. Also in the 5k race, Stephanie Felix will race her first 5k on the track this season. In the women's 1500m, the Lions will see senior Cynthia Chaidez and Shea Franklin, who is coming off a huge personal best this past weekend, looking to continue to stay competitive. Freshmen Laura Delgado and Kelly Shogren will join the upperclassmen in the 1500m as well both hoping to improve on their season records so far.

For the men, the 5k race should be a competitive field for the Lions. Freshman trio, Weston Strum, Kevin Joeger and Drew Dalton have all recorded individual victories this season and will be taking the track in the 5k distance. Dalton is coming off impressive victory last weekend, while Strum set a new school record for the mile, and finally, freshman teammate Kevin Joerger also recorded a 3k win at the Pomona Pitzer. Sophomore Tyre Johnson will also be trying to continue his performance of breaking fifteen minutes in his second 5k while Sterling Lockert will also be looking for a solid 5k performance. Finally senior Connor Pastoor is looking to improve on his first 5k this season and freshman Henry Jordan will take the track looking for a personal best as well.

In the 1500m, the men also have a loaded field with nine LMU men competing. Greg Innes and Oran Arms will once again lead the Lions in the top heat of the day and will be looking to hold their all-time record status. In the second heat, the Lions will see, Philip Benavides, Michael Herrera, Matthew Duncan, Dan Smith, RJ Larrieu, Scott Donahue and Mike Evans all competing. Most of the Lions are coming off personal bests at UC Irvine and are looking to get in even faster splits this weekend. Finally Michael Carlone will race the 3000m steeple chase again in a competitive field with over fifteen entered participants, it should be a good heat for Carlone to set a personal record.
