Women's Tennis Earns 1st Season Win

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The women's tennis team recorded their first win of the season today over UC Riverside. After clinching the doubles point, Melissa Valenzuela, Miya Jin and Ashley Anderson earned singles wins for the Lions to give LMU the overall win 4-3.

In doubles play the Lions saw wins from the top two courts. On court two, Elisaveta Pironkova and Reka Rohonyi quickly defeated Sakhakorn/McKay of UC Riverside 8-1. The duo is now 3-3 on the season overall in doubles play together. On court one, freshman Miya Jin and junior Ashley Anderson took out the Raney sisters of UC Riverside 8-3. This win give Anderson/Jin a 3-3 record on the season thus far. On court three Valenzuela/Morgan fell to Corpuz/Bergeson of UCR in a close 8-7.

After securing the doubles point, the Lions went on to earn the overall win in singles play. In only her second singles competition of the season, Melissa Valenzuela earned her first win over Jamie Raney 7-5, 6-0. Freshman Miya Jin improved her record to 4-3 in singles play, with a win over Nadia Sakhakorn 6-2, 7-5. In only her first season of collegiate play, Jin has made an impact for the Lions established a winning overall record and moving up in the Lion's lineup. On court four, teammate Ashley Anderson swiftly defeated Natalie McKay 6-0, 6-1. This gives Anderson her first win in singles on the season. Additionally she and partner Miya Jin both earned singles and a doubles win on the day for LMU. In other singles play, on court one Elisaveta Pironkova took Taylor Raney to three sets but was unable to hold in the third falling 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Corpuz of UCR defeated Reka Rohonyi 6-2, 6-4 on court five while, Bergeson of UCR won by default after Adriana Radinovic was injured during play.

After a tough schedule so far this season, the women's tough competitive play finally paid off with a victory. The Lions saw strong play in doubles today, almost winning on all three courts, while in singles they were able to hold strong and get wins on three courts. Next up, the Lions will play at Cal State Fullerton on February 24th at 2:00pm.
