LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU women's tennis team did not disappoint last weekend as LMU's young netters traded shots against the top-seven Division 1 tennis programs in the country, reaching the quarterfinals of both singles and doubles rounds on the second day of the Jack Kramer Women's Collegiate Invitational at Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.
Sophomore Miya Jin beat Megan Horter (Baylor) 4-6, 6-4,10-4 after a 2.5 hour match in the morning before coming back at 1pm for her second victory, a trouncing win over Megan Moore (Pepperdine) by scores of 6-2, 6-0. Jin's run came to an end in the quarterfinals as she fell to second-seed Pamela Montez of UCLA by scores of 6-2, 6-1. "One thing about Miya is she is a perfectionist, which is why she keeps on getting better every tournament and match," Head Coach Jamie Sanchez said.
In other singles play, LMU's Tory Parravi, Elisaveta Pironkova and Reka Rohonyi all dropped first-round matches to opponents.
On the doubles side, Jin and Parravi teamed to meet No. 5 doubles team of Miami's Anna Bartenstein and Gabriella Meijia in the quarterfinal round after a first-round bye. The duo fell to Miami by a score of 8-3. Pironkova and Rohonyi also joined forces in doubles play, falling to Pepperdine's Khunpak Issara and Moore, 8-2.
When asked about the quarterfinal doubles loss, Parravi ,who was ranked No.1 Girls 18 in San Diego last year, recounts "playing against the No. 5 doubles ranked team in the country like Miami was definitely a good experience to prepare us for our conferences matches, and we hope to just get better."
"These are obviously big matches for the girls, and as coaches, we try to tell them not to get caught up with the iconic identity of who they are playing against at the other side of the net," Sanchez said. "These are the times and experiences that can only make you better. Our goal for the fall semester has been to learn with every competitive experience and improve. We look forward to the competition. It is a privilege!"
The Lions will return to action on November 4 when they travel to Irvine, Calif. to play in the three-day UC Irvine Invitational.
