LMUat100: Men's Soccer in the NCAA Tournament

Nov. 2, 2011

LOS ANGELES -- Loyola Marymount University celebrates its Centennial in 2011-12, and LMU Athletics is honoring 100 years of history all season. Each of LMU's NCAA Division I programs will be hosting a Centennial Game to honor LMUat100, which includes the men's soccer match against Gonzaga on Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. As we approach the match, LMULions.com will take a look back at some of the memorable moments from women's soccer history. Today's look back features the Lions' five appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

In a nine-year stretch from 2001-09, LMU made five NCAA Tournament appearances, reaching the second round on three separate occasions. Among WCC schools, only Portland (six) and San Diego (five) can boast as many postseason trips in the same time period.

Within four years of arriving at LMU, head coach Paul Krumpe had the Lions in the NCAA Tournament for the very first time. The Lions earned their first bid in 2001, and picked up their first victory in 2002 with a 1-0 win over Cal State Northridge. LMU earned its first top-16 national seed and first round bye in 2003, and scored another 1-0 first round victory over Cal State Northridge in 2004. With four straight NCAA Tournament appearances between 2001 and 2004, LMU placed itself among the nation's elite soccer programs.

The Lions ended a four-year drought and returned to the postseason in 2009, hosting a first round game against Sacramento State.
