LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU men's golf team will make the annual trip to the West Coast Conference Men's Golf Championships this Monday and Tuesday, April 19-20, at the Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo, Calif. The winner gets the automatic bid the NCAA regionals in mid-May, and in the past five seasons, the Lions have been one of the teams challenging the top of the leader board.
The Lions will send one of its youngest rosters in recent history with sophomore Jake Sarnoff leading the way. In 30 rounds, Sarnoff leads the Lions with 72.7 stroke average and is considered one of the top young players in the WCC. He will be joined by junior John Lim, freshman Bryan Bergna, senior Blake Nicolai and freshman Boris Stantchev.
All five Lions have logged at least 27 rounds this season, with Sarnoff, Lim and Nicolai all returning from last year's team that finished second, just one stroke behind winner San Francisco.
LMU will open the tournament paired with San Diego and San Francisco in the final groupings. Stantchev will get things started at 9 a.m., followed 10 minutes later by Nicolai, then Bernga, Lim and then in the final grouping Sarnoff at 9:40.
Hiddenbroke is a par-72 and will play at 6,689 yards in the first two rounds with the length going to 6,762 for the final round on Tuesday. Players will face a reachable par-5 at the second hole at just 481 yards, but will face the longest hole on the course at hole five with a 586-yard par-5. A pair of par-3 holes await on the front nine as well, 151 yards on hole three and 207 yards on hole six.
The back nine will challenge players as two of its par-3 holes will be lengthened on the final round. Hole 13 will play 126 yards on Monday but will move to 151 yards on Tuesday. The final three holes will be the toughest, as it includes a pair of par-5 holes in the final three holes, including the 560-yard 18th, and in the middle will be the final lengthened par-3 at hole 17. It will play 179 yards on Monday but will be stretched to 227 yards on Tuesday.
