Results

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Men's tennis winning streak came to a halt earlier today when Marquette University edged out the Lions with a 4-3 victory. The Lions came close, getting three singles wins from Borja Malet, Geza Bazula, and Johan Berhof--just one point shy of the win. In doubles play, Lopez and Sauer got another win for their record and the only victory for the day in doubles match ups.

In singles play, Geza Bazula gave the Lions their first point of the day with a win over Marquette's Otavio Perim 6-3, 6-2. This win makes Bazula 5-3 in singles play on the season. On court three, Borja Malet added another win for the Lions with a victory over Niko Boulieris 6-3, 6-4. Earlier this month, Malet had three straight wins in singles and now has won four out of his last five singles matches. Johan Berhof gave the Lions their final point of the day defeating Jonathan Schwerin of Marquette 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. Berhof is now 6-5 in singles play this season. In other singles play, on both courts one and two the Lions pushed Marquette to three sets however were unable to come out with the win. Medan of Marquette ended Ivan Lopez's five match winning streak 6-7, 6-1, 6-3 while double partner Otto Sauer also fell to in three 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 to Rutherford. Finally Renzo Maggi was quickly shut down on court five by Straus of Marquette 6-4, 6-0.

In doubles play the Lions were highlighted by another win from Lopez/Sauer but were unable to clinch the overall doubles point. Lopez and Sauer defeated Schwerin and Rutherford of Marquette 8-6 for their fourth straight doubles win. In other doubles play Malet/Bazula were defeated 8-6 and Maggi/Von Der Ahe lost 8-3.

Next up, the Lions will play Dartmouth in the second annual Betty Werner Cup on Wednesday March 24th at 1:30 pm.
