Briefly: The Lions have won three straight matches are will be looking to continue this winning streak. The LMU men will face Marquette University at 1:30 pm at the LMU Tennis Center on Friday. The Lions are 6-7 overall this season and have won six of their last eight matches.
Lions to Watch: Junior, Ivan Lopez has been leading the Lions this season at the number one position. He has earned a 9-4 winning record in singles and has been undefeated in singles for the last five matches. Lopez and transfer Otto Sauer have also established a strong game as a doubles combination. They have proved a formidable opponent going 8-5 overall this season including wins over USD, Azusa Pacific and Gonzaga. Over the past week Lopez/Sauer have led the Lions in doubles winning three straight matches. In singles play, senior Renzo Maggi is currently 6-6 on the season and with two straight wins he will be looking for a win against Marquette to give him an overall winning record. Transfer Otto Sauer has also been playing well in singles and has three straight wins over the past week. Junior Johan Berhof has also earned some big singles wins for the Lions, with a 5-5 overall record. Senior Borja Malet has gone 3-1 over the past four matches in singles play and has recently teamed up with Geza Bazula for doubles proving to be a good combination with two straight wins. The Lions will also be looking to Geza Baluza and Jack Zapala for strong play in both doubles and singles.
Marquette University: Golden Eagles Marquette is part of the Big East Conference and was previously ranked at no. 70 in ITA rankings in early March. They were undefeated for 11 straight matches until February 28th when they were defeated by University of Pacific. The Golden Eagles are 12-4 overall this season and will be a competitive challenge for the Lions this Friday.
Betty Werner Cup: Loyola Marymount Men's Tennis will host the second annual Betty Werner Cup Wednesday March 24th at LMU Tennis Center. The Lions will face Dartmouth Big Green at 1:30 p.m. The match will be played in the memory of the late LMU Senior Associate Athletics Director who lost her battle with cancer last year.
