Eugene, Ore. - Trailing 3-0, LMU mounted a furious comeback and nearly pulled off the recovery thanks to two goals from sophomore Erin Rementer but time ran out as the Lions had their three-game winning streak snapped with a 3-2 defeat at Oregon on Friday night. The Lions (4-2-0) also see their three-match shutout streak come to an end against the hosts Ducks (3-1-1) in the opening game of the Oregon Nike Tournament.
LMU entered the game without having conceded a goal in its previous 274 minutes but that would all end as the visitors found themselves down 2-0 within the first 16:10. Kelsey Hones put Oregon ahead on the game's first shot at 6:17. Julie Armstrong played Hones in with a long ball over the top and Hones put it past senior goalkeeper Allyssa Clark for a 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, the Ducks doubled their lead with another Hones-Armstrong connection. Hones took the initial shot, which was saved by Clark, but the rebound came to Armstrong, who fired home. Reeling from the two-goal deficit, LMU soon found itself down three on Jen Stoltenberg's 25-yard shot.
Less than two minutes after the Ducks went ahead 3-0, Rementer pulled a goal back to send the Lions into the half trailing 3-1. Senior Lacey Bartels provided her third assist of the year, crossing in to the box for Rementer to redirect it past Cody Miles for her third goal of the season.
LMU regrouped at halftime and went on the offensive, looking to cut the Duck lead in half. Rementer made that happen with 14 minutes to go, notching her first career two-goal game off a pass from freshman Jordan Nelson to make it 3-2. With the goal, she took over the team points lead at eight, thanks to her four goals this year.
The Lions nearly completed the amazing comeback with seven minutes left when Bartels got loose for a header but the ball, and LMU's final hopes, were denied by the crossbar. The Lions would not get another shot.
Oregon held a 13-9 shot advantage, holding LMU under 10 shots for the first time this season. Clark made two saves while Miles also stopped two for Oregon.
LMU remains in the Beaver State to complete play at the Oregon Nike Tournament on Sunday. The Lions kick off with Oregon State at 11 a.m.
