About the San Diego State Aztecs (0-0-0)
San Diego State opens its regular season campaign against LMU on Tuesday but the Aztecs have already played a pair of exhibition matches, beating UC San Diego 3-0 on August 22 and winning 1-0 at Cal Poly on August 26. SDSU is coming off of a season in which it was 6-9-3 overall, placing third in the Pac-10 at 3-4-3. The Aztecs have been picked to finish fifth in the 2009 Pac-10 Preseason Coaches Poll.
SDSU leads the all-time series 8-5-1 against LMU but the teams have not met since 2003, when the Lions won 2-0. LMU is 3-1-1 vs. SDSU in their last five meetings but is 2-3-0 all-time when playing in San Diego.
About the Cal State Northridge Matadors (0-0-0)
Cal State Northridge also has an exhibition game under its belt, having come back from a 2-1 deficit to beat UNLV 3-2 last Friday. The Matadors open the regular season on Tuesday at LMU's WCC rivals, San Diego. Last year, CSUN went 8-7-4 and finished fifth in the Big West with a 4-3-3 mark. This year, the BWC coaches have tabbed the Matadors fourth in the preseason poll.
LMU and CSUN have not met since the 2004 NCAA Tournament first round, a 1-0 Lion win at home. That was the second of two postseason meeting for the teams, with LMU winning both. Still, Northridge leads the all-time series 9-6-2 and the Lions are 1-6-1 at CSUN.
Sampson One of 30 Candidates for Lowe's Senior CLASS Award
Fifth-year senior Patrick Sampson has been recognized for his efforts on and off the field, as he has been named a candidate for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. The award, given annually to senior student-athletes across nine NCAA Division I sports, selects individuals who qualified based on their dedication and achievement in four areas: Classroom, Character, Community, and Competition. Sampson is the third Lion men's soccer player to be nominated for the award, following on the heels of Trini Gomez, who was a finalist in 2007 and named to the Lowe's Senior CLASS All-America First Team, and Stephen Carlson last season.
Sampson (Lake Oswego, Ore.) won LMU's starting goalkeeper position last fall and proceeded to earn Second Team All-WCC and WCC All-Academic honors. On the field, he turned in the second-best goals-against-average (0.87) in program history while helping the Lions more than double their win total from the previous year. Off the field, Sampson is a member of the LMU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is a Student-Athlete Mentor. The past two summers, he has secured high-level internships in the field of wealth management, interning with Smith Barney in Chicago in 2008 and with Sampson Investment Management in 2009. He carries a 3.49 grade-point-average as a Business major.
From the initial list of 30 candidates, a national media committee will select the 10 finalists in October. The 10 finalists will then be put up for a nationwide vote among media and fans. Winners will be announced during the 2009 NCAA Men's Soccer College Cup in December.
Lions Picked Third in WCC Preseason Coaches Poll
LMU found itself in the thick of the action in the 2009 West Coast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, tying for third with Gonzaga and receiving one first-place vote. In voting conducted by the seven conference coaches, LMU received 23 total points and one first-place vote. They were the only team other than defending champions San Francisco to receive a first-place vote. San Francisco earned 36 total points and six first-place votes to top the poll. Santa Clara was picked second with 24 points, with LMU and Gonzaga just one point behind. San Diego (19 points) was fifth, Portland (16 points) was sixth, and Saint Mary's (six points) was sixth.
Baca, Downes Named Preseason All-WCC
In addition to the preseason poll, WCC coaches for the first time also selected a preseason All-Conference team, with junior forward Rafael Baca and sophomore defender Roger Downes as the only LMU players selected to the inaugural 12-player all-conference team. Baca was a First Team All-WCC selection in 2008 after leading the Lions with five goals and 11 points. Downes was the WCC Freshman of the Year and earned spots on the Second Team All-WCC and WCC All-Freshman teams. Portland had three players represented, with two each from LMU, Gonzaga, and San Francisco. San Diego, Santa Clara, and Saint Mary's each had one player.
What I Did on My Summer Vacation
The months of May, June, and July were nothing like a vacation for LMU's players as many stayed active in the summer months. Nine players featured in the United Soccer League's Super-20 League, two played at the US Youth Soccer Far West Regionals, and assistant coach Michael Erush was on the coaching staff for the United States team for the Maccabiah Games in Israel.
Of the nine Lions playing in the United Soccer League's Super-20 League, six were on the Chivas USA roster with three more suiting up for the LA Galaxy. Vincent Ocampo, Tyler Krumpe, Artur Jozkowicz, Fernando Barba, Jonas Reiter, and Jack McCormack helped take Chivas USA to the top of the Group A standings and all the way to the league's championship game. Meanwhile, Rafael Baca, Roger Downes, and Max Young represented the L.A. Galaxy, earning a second-place finish in league play.
At the club level, Logan McDaniel and Phil Da Silva helped DMS 11 advance through divisional play at the US Youth Soccer Far West Regionals to the championship game before falling in overtime. McDaniel has continued to play this summer, joining the Lancaster Rattlers of the USL Premier Development League. Also in action were incoming freshmen John Ikard and John LaCouture, who were members of Real Colorado's Under 17/18 squad that competed at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Finals. On the coaching side, in May, Erush was named the Head Coach for the Hollywood United Hitmen of the United Soccer League's Premier Development League. In the team's inaugural season, Erush took the team to the Southwest Division championship with a 10-3-3 mark.
In July, however, Erush took leave from the Hitmen to serve as an assistant coach for the United States team at the 18th Annual Maccabiah Games. The event featured Jewish athletes from over 60 countries with the soccer competition including 16 countries, separated into four groups of four teams each. The US squad went 2-1-0 and did not give up a goal in pool play but was upended in the quarterfinals by eventual runners-up United Kingdom and went on to finish fifth.
Krumpe Closing in on a Century
Already the winningest coach in LMU history, Paul Krumpe should hit a personal milestone this season when he records his 100th career coaching victory. Now in his 12th season with the Lions, Krumpe enters the 2009 campaign with a record of 97-93-25, meaning that the earliest that Krumpe can hit the century mark will be LMU's home opener on September 11 against San Jose State. When he reaches win #100, Krumpe will become the fourth active WCC coach to achieve the feat.
