Different Squad Opens Play in Utah

Sept. 19, 2005

Layton, UT (Sept. 19) - Playing with the deepest roster of his four years as head coach, Alex Galvan of the Loyola Marymount University men's golf team wanted to see each member of his young team in action. Thus, he took four different players up to the 2005 Purple and Red Invitational hosted by Weber State and Utah on Monday.

Sophomore Jason D'Amore, who led the Lions in 10 of 11 tournament as a freshman a year ago, was the only play to make the trip to Utah after playing in the season opener last week. D'Amore led all Lions with a two-round total of 150. As a team the Lions finished with a 302 in the first round and then shot a 309 in the afternoon. LMU sits at 611, good for 13th, 10 shots better than Sacramento State.

Making the trip with D'Amore was junior Jason Wilk, sophomore Josh Escobedo and freshmen Louie Bergna and Joe Stassi. All four did not make the trip last week as the Lions placed 7th of 13 at the Fairway Invitational hosted by the University of Nebraska.

After a round of 80 to start his career, Stassi rebounded for the low single round score on the day for the Lions at 72. He is second with a 152.

Escobedo, a walk-on to the team a year ago, was second for the Lions with rounds of 74 and 79 for a two-round total of 153. Bergna opened his collegiate career with an impressive 75 in the first round and then posted an 81 to finish at 156. Wilk finished with a 164.

The Lions will play the third and final round on Tuesday at the Valley View Golf Course in Layton, UT.
