Water Polo Splits Pair of Nail Biters

Sept. 18, 2005

Irvine, CA (Sept. 18) - Living up to tradition, the SoCal Invitational featured the best men's water polo teams in the nation and like it has in years past, the final day featured some of the best games of the tournament. The Loyola Marymount men's water polo team was no exception as they held on for a 7-6 win over 11th-ranked Navy to advance to the ninth place game, where they fell 10-8 in overtme against 12th-ranked Pacific.

Junior Cutberto Hernandez scored with 2:50 remaining in regulation to lift the ninth-ranked Loyola Marymount University men's water polo team to a 7-6 win over Navy at the SoCal Invitatonal on Sunday morning. Then Pacific's Andy Skora and Matt Turnbull scored overtime goals for a 10-8 win over Loyola Marymount in the ninth-place game of the Southern California Tournament. Turnbull sent the game into overtime ona a goal with 3:18 remaining in the fourth quarter. Endre Rex-Kiss led the Lions with three goals.

The Lions' record evens to 5-5 on the season as they take 10th place in the 16-team tournament hosted by UC Irvine at the Irvine Pool and Corona del Mar High School pool. The Lions will continue play among the best as they take on Western Water Polo Association rivel UC San Diego in La Jolla on Friday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. The Tritons finished the SoCal tournament in fifth.

Once again the Lions saw balance throughout the line-up scoring all seven goals by different players in the win over Navy. The game was defensive early as the Lions managed the only goal in the first quarter and then held a 3-1 lead at the break.

Navy (7-4) cut the lead to one with two goals in the third to just one for the Lions. The game then broke open in the fourth quarter as the Lions score three straight, including Hernandez' eventual game winner with 2:50 remaining to give the Lions a 7-5 lead. Navy would score with three second remaining for the final margin.

Also scoring for the Lions was Shaun Flood, Endre Rex-Kiss, Justin Coleman, Ben Easton and Scott Marshall. Junior goalie Ian Elliott finished with 10 saves, his second straight 10-save game.

In the ninth place contest, the two teams played even throughout. The game was tied at 2-2 after one and at the break Pacific held a 5-4 lead. Both teams managed two goals each in the third. LMU would then scored two consecutive goals in the fourth period to take an 8-7 lead before Pacific answered. Brian McShane added two goals for the Lions.
