USAFA, CO (Oct. 2) - The Loyola Marymount University men's water polo team took a pair from Brown University in the final day of the East Meets West Tournament hosted by Air Force. The Lions won both games by a score of 10-6 to run to the tournament title.
The Lions completed a five-game sweep during the tournament, giving them a five-game winning streak as they run their record to 10-7 on the year. During the tournament, the ninth-ranked Lions had senior Endre Rex-Kiss claim MVP honors while goalie Ian Elliott and Matt Reynolds earned All-Tournament team honors.
Like they did in the first three games of the tournament, the Lions had balanced scoring. In the first game the Lions had eight players score while seven scored in the championship game win. In game one to put the Lions into the title game, Tim Hummel and Reynolds scored two each while Scott Marshall had three in the championship.
Game one saw the Lions take a 3-2 lead after one in a back-and-forth affair in the first period. However, LMU scored three unanswered in the second frame to take a 6-2 lead into the lockerroom at the break. Another three-goal frame in the third put the game away. In addition to Hummel and Reynolds, Cutberto Hernandez, Brian McShane, Ratko Paunovic, Marshall, Rex-Kiss and Mark Milovic all scored for the Lions.
LMU came out strong in the first period of the championship, taking a 5-1 lead at the break. It was all the cushion the Lions would need as both teams played even the rest of the way. Also scoring for the Lions in the title game was McShane, Ben Easton, Reynolds, Hummel and Nik Barr.
The Lions head back to Los Angeles and travel to USC to take on Trojans at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8. The Lions will then host Princeton on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 11:00 a.m.
