Lions Fall In Series Opener At San Diego

March 19, 2004

Box Score

San Diego, CA (Mar. 19) - The Loyola Marymount Lions baseball team dropped the first game of it's three game series at San Diego Friday afternoon. Kyle Mura led the Lions going 2-for-3 with a homerun in the 11-2 loss.

LMU (11-9, 3-1) got out to an early lead over San Diego (12-12, 1-3) when with two outs in the top of the third Billy Lockin reached base on a fielder's choice. He would move to second on a wild pitch and then score on an RBI single by Joe Frazee giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.

The very next inning LMU extended it's lead to 2-0 when Kyle Mura led off the fourth with a homerun to centerfield. For Mura it was his second homerun of the season and his team leading sixteenth RBI. Unfortunately for the Lions that's all the offense they would get.

The Toreros scored single runs in the fourth and the sixth inning off of Lions' starter Will Quaglieri (2-3) to tie the game. Keoni Ruth got USD on the board with an RBI double and Joey Prast tied the game in the sixth with an RBI single. Then in the seventh, with a runner on first and Quaglieri exiting the game having gone six and two thirds strong innings, the USD bats took over by scoring nine runs, all coming with two outs. And that is how the game would end up. Quaglieri once again took a tough luck loss allowing just seven hits and three runs.

Mura and Frazee led the way offensively but got support from Brady Koch who was 1-for-1 and Clint McGill who chipped in with a base hit. On the mound, Matt Cova came in from the bullpen and pitched a nice inning and a third of shutout baseball.

The Lions and the Toreros will play games Saturday and Sunday at 1pm (PST) to finish up with each other for the season. Both games can be heard on the Lions' Audio Network www.LmuLions.com. LMU swept San Diego at Page Stadium in the first series between the two teams.
