Princeville, HI (March 19) - After the first round of the 2004 Kauai Collegiate Cup, the Loyola Marymount University men's golf team sits in a tie for second place, just one stroke out of the lead on Friday afternoon at the Princeville Makai Cource in Princeville, HI.

The Lions finished the first round of play on the par-72 course with a team score of 295. LMU is tied with Simon Fraser University at seven-over par and just one stroke behind British Columbia University. Rounding out the field is De Paul (299) in fourth, host Western Kentucky (301) in fifth and American University in sixth (310).

Senior Gavin Witzer led the Lions and sits in a third place tie overall with a one-under 71 in the first round. Witzer had a consistent first round, shooting a 35 in the front nine and followed that with a 36 in the back nine.

Freshman Brendan von Doehren and junior Peter Heilbron followed Witzer with a two-over par 74 to place in a three-way tie for 10th place. Two strokes behind in a three-way tie for 16th place is senior Joe Legacy with a 76 (four-over par).

Sophomore Dean Delaye rounds out the five-man team for the Lions in a five-way tie for 23rd place with a first round 80.

The tournament will continue on Saturday, March 20.
