Briefly
The Loyola Marymount University men's golf team finished with its best score in program history with a three-round total of 886 at the West Coast Conference Championships. It is the first time since the WCC went to a 54-hole scoring format that the Lions finished with a score under 900. The previous low was a 915 set in both 1998 and 1999. The Lions were playing their best golf at the end of the 2003 season, as they scored a season best 875 on a 54-hole tournament at the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational.

Making a Statement
Freshman Chaz Inouye finished the 2003 WCC Championships with a one-under 215 to place third overall. With his rounds of 73, 70 and 72, the Wailuku, Hawaii, native was named the WCC Freshman of the Year. His average round of 71.6 at the WCCs was the lowest in program history. Inouye was the Lions best golfer down the stretch, hitting an average round of 71.5 his final two tournaments to earn first-team All-Conference honors. He is the first Lion to earn freshman of the year honors and just the third to earn All-WCC accolades. He is the first to earn that honor since Scott Hyen was named to the team in 2000. Inouye's third place finish was also the best for the Lions since Eugene Burns tied for third with a 222 in 1988. Only Todd Yoshitake in 1981 and Jim Cormie in 1972 finished higher than Inouye, both earning second place. However, their average round were 75.0 and 77.0, respectively.

Low Rounds
Freshman Chaz Inouye's 67 in the second round of the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational on April 7 was the lowest round for the Lions this season. Posting the Lions best three-round tournament of the season was junior Mike Farrell with a seven-under par 209 at the Cal State San Marcos Invitational on March 3-4. He hit a 68 in both the second and third rounds to win the tournament. Also posting sub-70 rounds on the season was freshman Dean Delaye with his 69 in the second round of the Family Motors Invitational on Feb. 24 and junior Gavin Witzer also had a 69 at the Cal State San Marcos Invitational.

Bright Future
Freshmen led the Lions in scoring this 2003 season, leaving the team in good shape heading into next year. Chaz Inouye led the Lions with an average round of 74.59. Walk-on freshman Andrew Patterson was second with a 75.78 average. Placing third through seventh, respectively, was junior Mike Farrell (76.08), junior Joe Legacy (76.79), freshman Dean Delaye (78.21), junior Gavin Witzer (80.38) and junior Will Luciano (80.77).
