LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Loyola Marymount men's water polo senior Scott Smith scored early in the third period to tie the game against top-ranked USC 5-5. However, the Trojans scored four unanswered to pull away to hand the No. 10 Lions another heartbreaker, 11-6 on Wednesday evening.
USC's Gadi Hadar scored three goals and Juraj Zatovic scored both of his goals in a key third period for the Trojans, who were named No. 1 in the nation's poll released today. The Lions fall to 9-11 on the season.
LMU's Scott Smith tied the match at 5-5 early in the third period before the Trojans rattled off four unanswered goals to put the match away. Bozidar Damjanovic made 10 saves in goal for the Trojans.
Senior Ryan Chapatte scored two goals for the Lions while Trevor Wagner, Tamas Szego and Kris Barr added a goal each.
The Lions will battle Whittier on Saturday at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center at 2:30 p.m.
