SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Loyola Marymount scored five second-period goals as the seventh-ranked Lions came from behind to defeat the Sacramento State men's soccer team 5-1, Friday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field. Loyola Marymount remains undefeated at 7-0-2 while the Hornets are now 2-3-2 on the year.
Sacramento State held a 1-0 advantage at halftime after sophomore Brent Hamilton found the net in the 44th minute off of a combination of assists by Joel Rodriguez and David Fraser. Rodriguez had attempted a header on a cross from the left side but the ball trickled towards the end line. Before the ball crossed the line, Rodriguez kicked the ball back over his head toward the Lions' goal. Fraser one touched to the pass to Hamilton for the header goal.
Loyola Marymount tied the score in the 53rd minute when junior midfielder Kevin Novak capitalized off a deflection in front of the Hornet goal. Junior goalkeeper Jeff Gibson made a save in front of the net but the ball rolled back towards the midfield. Novak attacked and completed the play. Junior midfielder Pat Parker gave LMU its first lead in the 67th minute after scoring off an assist by teammate Yuji Teranishi.
The Lions added another goal less than a minute later when Michael Erush connected on a penalty-kick goal. Loyola Marymount was awarded the shot after a Lions' player had been tackled in the Hornets' keeper box by Gibson. It is Erush's second penalty kick goal of the year. Senior midfielder Andres Murriagui tallied a goal in the 72nd minute off of Teranishi's second assist in the contest and Novak recorded his
second goal in the 76th minute to seal the win. Murriagui and senior forward Arturo Torres where credited with the assists on the final goal.
LMU goalkeeper Adam Sthay earned the win while Gibson finished with a game-high five saves.
The Lions out shot the Hornets 16-7 in the game including a 12-4
advantage in the second period.
Loyola Marymount wraps up the weekend in the Bay Area this Sunday. The Lions travel to San Jose, Calif. to face the San Jose State Spartans on Sunday, Sept. 29. Game time is slated for 5 p.m.
