Los Angeles, CA - The Loyola Marymount University (LMU) 66th-ranked women's tennis team fell to the 65th-ranked Oregon Ducks 4-3 Friday afternoon at LMU's Tennis Complex in a close match.
The match opened with the doubles competition, as the Lions were victorious in two of the three events. LMU's top-seeded doubles team, Andrea Lord and Angelina Zdorovytska, defeated Davina Mendiburu and Courtney Nagle 8-3. Julie Hladik and Georgina Dinham defeated Adeline Arnaud and Ester Bak 8-4 at the No. 3 spot. Edit Pakay and Penka Fileva fell to Monika Gieczys and Janice Nyland 6-8 in the second seed.
In singles, Lord defeated Oregon?s Nyland in straight sets, coming down to a close second-set tie breaker (7-5, 7-6). Pakay played No. 2 for the Lions and was defeated by Davina Mendibury in straight sets, 4-6, 1-6. Gieczys defeated Zdorovytska at the third spot 6-1, 0-6, 6-4. LMU?s Fileva was successful playing at No. 4 for the Lions and she defeated Oregon's Nagle 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. The Ducks took the match at the fifth and sixth spots as Dinham fell to Vickie Gunnarsson (6-7, 6-2, 6-1) and Hladik fell to Bak (2-6, 4-6).
On Sunday the Lions will travel to Newport Beach, Calif., to face the No. 33 Mississippi women's tennis team. That match is scheduled to start at 2:30 at the Newport Beach Raquet Club.
