Los Angeles, CA (Nov. 13, 2002) -- Junior Ryan Chapatte of the men's water polo team and freshman Kellie Schroeder of the women's soccer program have been named the Loyola Marymount University Student-Athlete of the Month for leading their respective teams to high levels of success in the months of October.
Schroeder and the women's soccer team earned their first trip to the NCAA Women's Soccer College Cup, wrapping up the regular season with a 10-6-3 record. They will take on UCLA in the first round at 8:30 p.m. at UCLA. Tickets for the College Cup are available by calling LMU's ticket office at (310) 338-LION.
As for Chapatte and the men's water polo team, they have earned a national ranking of No. 7, their highest in program history. They wrap up their regular season Nov. 13 at fifth-ranked Pepperdine before heading off to UC San Diego to defend their Western Water Polo Association championship they won in 2001. The freshman Schroeder scored four of the Lions' eight goals in the month of October. Of her four goals, two of them were game winners as the Lions played for the right to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Schroeder had both of the Lions' goals in their 2-2 tie to highly-ranked USC. She added the game winner against UC Irvine and Gonzaga.
Chapatte's latest offensive output in October helped LMU to some of their biggest wins in school history. For the month he scored 16 goals, 10 steals and three assists. He had a hat-trick in the Lions triple overtime win over Long Beach State, another in the win over BYU-Hawaii and a third in a tough loss to third-ranked UC Irvine. His one goal in sudden death overtime against fifth-ranked Pepperdine was the game winner, helping LMU to their first ever win over the Waves.
Also nominated this month were Arturo Torres (men's soccer), Kealani Kimball (volleyball), Edit Pakay (cross country), and Bernie Ochoa (cross country). The selections are made by the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, which features members from all 17 sports at LMU.
