Spikers Down Indiana 3-1 In Day 1 Of LMU Volleyball Classic

Sept. 7, 2001

Stats

Los Angeles, CALIF., - Friday, September 7, 2001 - The Loyola Marymount women's volleyball team downed Indiana 3-1 (26-30, 30-21, 30-28, 30-20) in front of 347 on Day 1 of the LMU Volleyball Classic in Gersten Pavilion. Junior Laura Gustorf set a new LMU record for service aces in a four game match with seven, also a career-best for Gustorf.

The Lions (3-2 Overall/0-0 WCC) used Gustorf's serving efforts to take a quick 4-0 lead in Game 1. LMU kept the pressure on opening a 13-4 advantage. Indiana would not be dismissed though as it battled back to tie the game at 25. The Hoosiers first lead of the game came at 26-25 and it would be all IU needed to steal a Game 1 victory 30-26.

The Game 1 loss was enough for LMU as it came back to win three straight. After falling behind early in Game 2 the Lions came together and used timely serving and on-target hitting to go up 25-19 at one point. LMU would go on to tie the match one game apiece with a 30-21 win in Game 2. The Lions held the Hoosiers to a mere .034 hitting percentage in the second game.

IU again started strong in Game 3 taking 5-0 lead and forcing an early LMU time-out. The break in play motivated the Lions to knot the score at 10-10. LMU got its second wind following the tie and went on to record a 30-28 win in the third game.

The fourth and deciding game was all LMU as it never relinquished the lead. The Lions hit and served their way to a 30-20 win of the game and match. LMU out hit the Hoosiers Game 4 by an 18-9 kill margin.

Four Lions would hit the double-digit kills total on the night. Junior Kristen Gallup led the way with a match-high 21 kills. She was followed by sophomores Nicole Oehlman and Kealani Kimball who each tallied 13. Freshman Dina DeBernardi pounded out 11 kills, a season-high for the rookie. Gallup picked up the only double-double of the evening collecting a match-high 10 digs. Oehlman hit a blistering .619 for the night and was error-free in her hitting for the night (13k-0e-21a).

The Lions return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 8 for Day 2 of the 2001 LMU Volleyball Classic. Session 1 begins at 10 a.m. with Arizona State and New Mexico, that match will be followed by the Lions facing New Mexico. The evening session begins at 5 p.m. with Indiana vs. New Mexico.
