Men's Soccer To Turn Season Around

Sept. 19, 2001

Just Briefly

Loyola Marymount men's soccer is coming off of a much needed 4-0 shutout of the UC Riverside Highlanders. They defeated the Highlanders Tuesday in San Bernadino after canceling their road trip to Wisconsin because of the terrorist attacks last week. Before this win, the last time the Lion's men's soccer team saw competition was at the Cal Berkely Tournament over a week ago, where they split the weekend, capturing thier first regular season win over the California Golden Bears.

Up Next

The Lions stay home this weekend to host the 2001 LMU Fall Classic Tournament. They face UC Irvine on Friday at 3:00 p.m., and on Sunday they take on Harvard at 3:00 p.m. Fellow WCC team San Diego also plays in the tournament, however they don't face the Lions until later in the season.

Building Momentum

The Lion's were hot on the trail as they traveled to San Bernadino, CA where they faced UC Riverside on the field. With the cancellations of the games last weekend, the Lions knew that this win was needed to jump-start the rest of the regular season. LMU came out strong in the game, with the first goal coming from junior forward Arturo Torres. He shot an unassisted free kick from the left side to put the Lions up in the 17th minute of the game. Armando Melendez scored the next goal for the Lions at the 50th minute of the game, assisted by Rigo Pardo and Jay Paul Lowry. This was Lowry's first game on the field as a Lion, as he came to LMU from Portland just this year. Not more than two minutes later, at 52:01, Torres was at it again, taking the pass from Jeff Kovar and Andres Murriagui for the goal. Kovar and Murriagui each picked up their first assists of the season in that play. Torres scored his third goal of the season. Murriagui took it upon himself to put the game away with his free kick at the 62:41-minute mark of the game. He scored the last goal of the game on a straight-away free kick. This was Murriagui's second goal of the season.

GOAL!!!!!

Junior forward Arturo Torres leads the men's soccer season with three goals. In the Lion's win over UC Riverside, Torres scored two goals for the Lions, ensuring the team's victory. Junior midfielder Andres Murriagui is close behind Torres with a pair season goals. Murriagui also has one assist on the season. Freshman forward Armando Melendez has made his way into the points with his single goal this season.

Back For Seconds

The 2001 Lions return with all but two starters from last year. Among those returning are second team All-WCC selections Jeff Kovar, and Michael Erush. Joining them is Andres Murriagui who earned All-WCC Honorable Mention. They are joined by veterans Philip Arias, Michael Coakley, Kevin Novak, Rigo Pardo and Dan Sheridan. Kovar and Torres were both selected to the All-Tournament Team for the 2001 Fila Cup Tournament.

LMU Head Coach

Paul Krumpe enters his fourth season at the helm of the LMU men's soccer program. As the 1999 WCC Coach of the Year, Krumpe led the team to their most successful season in program history, establishing a new LMU men's soccer record for wins in a season (10-7-1). A 1986 graduate of UCLA, Krumpe came to LMU after spending three seasons as an assistant with the Bruins. During those seasons, he helped lead UCLA to a record of 56-9-1, three NCAA regional appearances, three Mountain Pacific Sports Federation titles and a national championship in 1997. As a player for UCLA, Krumpe was a four-year starter (1982-85), co-captain of the 1985 NCAA Championship team and a two-time All-Far West Region selection. He also has extensive international experience, playing in over 40 games with Team USA including the 1988 Summer Olympics.

Crimson Calls

Sophomore Ladd Fritz (Tulsa, OK) has scored in both Harvard contests leading up to the LMU Fall Classic. Fritz is the team's top returning scorer and one of only three players to start every game for the Crimson in 2000. Kevin Ara (Upland, CA) has posted a goal and two assists for the Crimson already this season, tying his point total of four from last season. Three Crimson players call California home, including sophomores Kevin Ara and Spencer George (Mission Viejo, CA), and freshman Jeremy Truntzer (Palo Alto, CA).

Anteater Tid-Bits

UC Irvine is led this season by Seal Wolf who has two goals off of four shots. Following closely behind with one goal each are Jon Spencer, and Dardo Acuna. In their first game this season the Anteaters tied IP-Fort Wayne 1-1. The Anteaters are on a three-game winning streak taking 1-0 games away from each Missouri - KC, Gonzaga, and UCLA. The defense from UC Irvine has been led by goalkeeper C.J. Cooper who has recorded 12 saves, and allowed only one goal for the season. With their three straight shutouts, the Anteaters look to be hot on the trail as they come to LMU's Fall Classic.
