LOS ANGELES, Calif. (May 11, 2001) - In the second round of games of the Western Intercollegiate Softball League (WISL), host Loyola Marymount University (35-21) got back on track with a 4-2 win over Saint Mary's and a 4-0 shutout of Santa Clara.
In the other two contests, Saint Mary's (27-32) took an early lead in the tournament standings with a come-from-behind win over San Diego (21-33). The Toreros had dropped its first game of the tournament when Santa Clara (15-38) claimed a 2-1 victory.

Game 5 - Loyola Marymount 4, Saint Mary's 2
The Lions' Christy Cerecedes and Kim Bissett each banged out two hits as the Lions broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth inning with a pair of runs to earn the 4-2 win over the Gaels.
LMU opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Anna Trauernicht led the game with a single and was moved over by Laura Eckley's ground ball to second base. Cerecedes hit her eighth double of the season to score Trauernicht. Bissett's single would score Cerecedes for the early 2-0 lead.
Saint Mary's would not struggle against LMU starter freshman Sami Strinz until the fifth inning. The Gaels would get tie the score in the bottom of the fifth inning. Taiya Turner, who finished the first game 3-for-3, would score the second run of the inning. Jenn Arnold scored the first run of the inning after singling to lead off the inning.
The Lions would respond and take the lead for good in the sixth. Trauernicht would leadoff the inning with a walk and following Cerecedes single, would score on Bissett's double. Cerecedes would also score on Bissett's third double of the season.
Strinz finished the game, throwing a complete game to improve to 9-5 on the season. She allowed two runs on six hits for the Lions. Jennifer Eaton earned the loss and fell to 12-15 on the season.
Game 6 - Loyola Marymount 4, Santa Clara 0
LMU would complete a sweep on the day with a 4-0 shutout of the Broncos to improve to 2-2 in the tournament. The Lions Jennifer Heliotes scattered nine hits in the complete game shutout to improve to 9-5 on the season.
For the second straight game the Lions scored early and Heliotes made the lead stand. Lisa Abbott's double would score Strinz, who started at third base in the game six. Strinz reached on a single with two outs.
The Lions would add a pair of runs in the third inning to build a 3-0 lead. Cerecedes drew a two-out walk and would score on Bissett's single. Cerecedes would score on freshman Trisha Gomes single.
Gomes would do more damage in the sixth inning with her first career home run over the center field fence. She would finish the game 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Game 7 - Santa Clara 2, San Diego 1
Santa Clara's Deanna Rodriguez threw a complete game to help the Broncos to a 2-1 win over San Diego, giving the Toreros their first loss of the WISL Tournament.
Rodriguez scattered seven hits over the seven innings, allowing just the one run in the sixth inning. She finished with two strikeouts and one walk.
The Broncos scored two in the top of the first inning and Rodriguez did the rest. Kristi Harrington had a one-out single and scored on Coresta Salas' single. Salas would score on Rodriguez's single. Both Harrington and Salas finished with two hits, Harrington going 2-for-4 with a run scored and Salas was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Toreros cut the Bronco lead to 2-1 when Jade Quentin hit a one-out triple to right-center field. Kristy Clarke's single scored Quentin. Clarke finished the game 3-for-3 with an RBI.
Game 8 - Saint Mary's 6, San Diego 4
Trailing 4-0 after four innings, Saint Mary's scored the games final six runs to claim a 6-4 win over San Diego and take an early lead in the WISL Standings.
The big inning by the Gaels was in the sixth with a four-run outburst that gave them the lead for good. The Gaels finished with 13 hits, chasing starter Anna Russell in the sixth inning. Russell finished allowing four runs on nine hits for no decision. Reliever Allison Williams earned the loss, allowing two runs in two innings.
Sara Wiedlin finished strong for the Gaels, allowing four runs on six hits in five innings of work for the win. Jennifer Eaton claimed her first save of the season, throwing two innings and allowing just one hit.
