Softball Sweeps Tulsa....Again

    Los Angeles, Calif., - Monday, April 16, 2001 - The Loyola Marymount women's softball team swept its Western Athletic Conference doubleheader against Tulsa (10-31/0-4 WAC) on Monday afternoon in Sand Springs, Okla. LMU took Game 1 by a score of 8-0 and Game 2 by a score of 4-2. LF Anna Trauernicht led the Lions with 4-for-8 effort on the day while also scoring one run and driving in three.

    The Lions' (29-17 Overall/8-8 WAC) starting pitcher Corianne Rogalsky pitched a complete game shutout in Game 1 allowing just four hits and striking out three through seven innings.

    LMU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in Game 1. SS Kim Bissett singled home Trauernicht for the first run with one out. Rogalsky helped her cause scoring CF Christy Cerecedes on a grounder to second base picking up an RBI on the play. 3B Sami Strinz scored the Lions' third run of the day in the fourth inning after reaching base on a single. Trauernicht sent Strinz home on a single to the shortstop. That was not enough for LMU who broke things open in the top of the seventh inning. A single, a walk and a wild pitch began the final inning for LMU and gave the Lions runners on second and third with no outs. Bissett grounded out for the first out giving way to Rogalsky. Rogalsky came through again with a single through the left side which scored Eckley and advanced Cerecedes to third. Strinz then came up and collected her third hit of the day along with her first RBI as she drove in Cerecedes on the play.

    That would be all for Tulsa starting pitcher Amy Van Huss. Van Huss lasted 6.1 innings and gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits. Jenny Magill came on in relief with just one out recorded in the seventh inning.

    The Lions weren't done yet. With bases loaded C Amy Dent singled in the sixth LMU run and Strinz scored to make it 7-0 after a fielding error by Tulsa 3B Jessee Ayala. Trauernicht recorded her second hit and picked up her second RBI pushing the Lions to an 8-0 victory. Rogalsky earned the win for LMU improving her record to 15-5 while Van Huss collects the loss for Tulsa and falls to 3-14.

    Just one inning was all the Lions needed in Game 2. LMU scored all four runs in the top of the second which again started out with a walk to Bissett. Rogalsky then reached on a fielder's choice moved Bissett safely over to second. Strinz recorded the first out while advancing both runners, giving the Lions runners in scoring position with one out. C Trisha Gomes hit into the second fielder's choice of the inning moving Rogalsky third while Bissett was out at the plate. A single by Dent scored LMU's first run of the game while the second was scored on an error by Tulsa 1B Lauren Capriotti. Back-to-back RBI singles by Trauernicht and 2B Laura Eckley rounded the Lions' scoring.

    Tulsa's only runs came in the fifth and seventh innings. RF Christy Watkins singled home Ayala in the fifth; Ayala had reached on a one out triple. Watkins picked up the RBI in the seventh as well. Her two out double to left scored CF Kari Curtis cutting the lead to 4-2. Tulsa managed one more hit by SS Danielle Olsen but could not come any closer.

    Sami Strinz threw a complete seven innings for LMU and picked her eighth win of the year, she improves to 8-5. Magill suffered the loss for Tulsa, her record falls to 7-14.

    The Lions return to action this Saturday, April 21 when they travel to Fresno, Calif to meet the Fresno State Bulldogs. The WAC doubleheader is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
