LOS ANGELES — LMU rallied from a three-run deficit to take a brief lead in the seventh inning Saturday, but five errors proved too costly as Pepperdine rallied for four runs in the eighth to defeat the Lions 10-7 in West Coast Conference play at Page Stadium. The loss drops LMU to 10-30 overall and 2-12 in league play.
LMU starter
Adam Behrens kept Pepperdine off the board through the first three innings, but the Waves broke through in the fourth. James Dell'Amico singled and Joshua Woodworth doubled to put runners at the corners, and a Trey Dunn walk loaded the bases. Shawn Romero followed with a run-scoring single to plate Dell'Amico, Danny Cook added a sacrifice fly to score Woodworth, and Dunn crossed on a wild pitch to give Pepperdine a 3-0 lead.
The Lions responded in the bottom of the fourth.
Zion Williams led off with a double to left field, and with two outs,
Luca Danos singled and promptly stole second with Williams scoring on the throw to cut the deficit to 3-1.
LMU pulled even in the sixth against Pepperdine reliever Jack Fowler. With two outs,
Noah Malone was hit by a pitch, advanced on a wild pitch, and Danos was also plunked to put two aboard.
JD Dunn singled to center to score Malone, and
Jordan Ortiz followed with a single to center, scoring Danos. Both runs were charged to outgoing starter Tommy Scavone, who departed with a 3-2 lead entering the frame but gave way to Fowler before either scored.
LMU appeared poised to seize control in the seventh. The Lions sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four times, but three of those runs came across without a hit. With two outs and runners on second and first, Malone reached on a throwing error by shortstop Julian Nunez that allowed
Andrew Mhoon and Williams to score, one unearned. LMU reliever Fowler was replaced by Jackson Pace, who walked
Nate Stiveson;
Travis Friend, running for Malone, stole third and scored on a throwing error by catcher Romero. After Stiveson stole second and two more walks loaded the bases, Kam Croghan came on and hit
Matt Moreno to force in the fourth run of the inning. Just like that, LMU led 7-6, with only one of the four runs earned.
Pepperdine answered immediately. Cook opened the eighth with a single, and pinch hitter Aidan Camberg singled to move Cook to second before Joe Cardinale came on to pinch-run. A throwing error by pitcher
Jake Geis moved Cardinale to second and Cook to third, and a walk to Daniel Patterson loaded the bases. Dell'Amico's fielder's choice scored Cook, and a throwing error by Moreno allowed Cardinale to score as well. After Woodworth flied out, Dunn reached on another Moreno throwing error that plated Patterson, and Kai Laxa singled up the middle to score Dell'Amico and make it 10-7. Pepperdine's four-run frame was fueled largely by three LMU errors.
Lucien Wechsberg retired the Lions in order in the eighth and again in the ninth to close out the game, earning his fifth save of the season.
Behrens was charged with four earned runs over 6â…“ innings in the no-decision. Geis fell to 0-5, yielding six runs, three earned, on five hits over 1â…” innings in relief while absorbing three errors behind him in the eighth. Croghan picked up the win.
For LMU, Moreno finished 2-for-3 with a double, while Williams went 1-for-4 with a double and scored twice. The Lions were active on the bases with five stolen bases as a team, but the five errors were the difference.
