Lions Continue Doubles Success, Put Away Anteaters Early

LOS ANGELES — Max Wuelfing remained perfect on the season and LMU's doubles unit once again set the tone as the Lions defeated UC Irvine 4-3 Saturday at the LMU Tennis Center in Los Angeles, Calif.

The No. 55 Lions (8-1) secured the doubles point behind a pair of victories on courts one and three, with court two left unfinished. Cyrus Ahmad and Darius Tamaddon struck first, clinching the point with a 6-4 win over Sohrob Amiryavari and Alex Guajardo on court three. The No. 1 tandem of Alex Padro Parra and Wuelfing followed with a 7-5 victory over Max Fardanesh and Rohan Sachdev on court one. Cesar Cruz and Emil Kindhultwere locked in a battle with Tal Goodman and Hiroki Sakagawa on court two when play was called.

The doubles victory extended a remarkable run for LMU, which has dropped just one doubles point all season long.

Tamaddon, meanwhile, has quietly emerged as a doubles force, Saturday's win marked his fourth consecutive doubles victory, accomplished with two different partners this season.

In singles, LMU's big three kept their momentum going. Padro Parra was first to finish, dispatching Rui Ning Huang 6-1, 6-4 to extend his winning streak to six consecutive matches. Cruz was next, rolling past Fardanesh 6-2, 6-2 to push his own winning streak to three straight.

Wuelfing, as has become routine, delivered at No. 1 singles to put the match out of reach. The senior knocked off Hiroki Sakagawa 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to improve to 8-0 overall and 6-0 at the top spot, remaining the only unbeaten player in the Lions' lineup.

UC Irvine picked up points at No. 4, No. 3 and No. 6 singles. Amiryavari handled Kuba Hrynkiewicz 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4, Goodman outlasted Kindhult 7-6, 2-6, 6-1 at No. 3, and Greg Gamal edged Cyrus Ahmad 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6 to make it a one-point final.
