Box Score MORAGA, Calif. — No. 58 LMU men's tennis earned a 4-1 road win over Saint Mary's on Sunday, pushing the program's best-ever start to 14-1.
Saint Mary's claimed the doubles point, taking both No. 1 over
Alex Padro Parra and
Max Wuelfing 6-4 and No. 3 over
Cyrus Ahmad and
Darius Tamaddon 6-4.
Emil Kindhult and
Cesar Cruz put up a fight at No. 2, winning 6-3, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Gaels from taking the early lead.
That was the only point the Gaels would score.
LMU's singles lineup answered emphatically. Padro Parra set the tone at No. 4, dictating play from the baseline en route to a clean 6-2, 6-2 win. Cruz was equally sharp at No. 2, using his aggressive game to dispatch his opponent 6-1, 6-3 without ever facing a real threat. Kindhult continued the onslaught at No. 3, overpowering his man 6-1, 6-2 in what felt like a mismatch from the first game.
Messerli clinched the match at No. 6, winning a competitive first set 7-5 before pulling away in the second to close out a 7-5, 6-1 victory and send the Lions into celebration.
With the match sealed, Hrynkiewicz was firmly in control at No. 5 with a 7-5, 5-1 lead, while Wuelfing had battled back to level at 5-5 in the second set after dropping the first 4-6, his match left unfinished with the result already decided.
LMU's 14-1 record continues to stand as the finest start in program history and they improve to 2-0 in the West Coast Conference.Â
The Lions will return home to face Gonzaga and Portland in the coming week. Matches will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
