LOS ANGELES – For the second consecutive game, LMU men's basketball set the tone from the jump. Following Wednesday's 20-3 start, the Lions scored 17 unanswered points to open Saturday's game before ultimately defeating San Diego 83-63.
Jan Vide started the game with a jumper in the paint, then Jalen Shelley followed with the same shot. After Rick Issanza's offensive rebound and putback, Rodney Brown Jr. scored the next five points to push the lead to 11-0 less than four minutes into play. A trio of layups by Shelley, Aaron McBride, and Myron Amey Jr. pushed the lead to 17-0 with 13:50 showing on the first half clock.
San Diego started 0-8 from the field before hitting their first field goal. The Toreros finished the first half at 25 percent (7-for-28) from the floor. LMU's lead was cut to 11 at one point before halftime before Shelley hit a three in the final minute to return the lead to 17 at intermission. LMU shot 50 percent (15-for-30) from the floor in the first half to hold a 37-20 advantage.
Issanza opened the second half with a dunk as LMU's lead grew and hit as large as 28 points with 12:11 to play.
The Toreros showed fight in the second half, shooting 60.0 percent (18-for-30) in the second half to cut their deficit down to 14. Shelley helped take over down the stretch and finished with his second 20-plus point performance of the week. Shelley led the Lions with 24 points and nine rebounds, and matched his career-high, which he set on Wednesday, with nine made field goals.
The Lions shot 61.5 percent (16-for-26) themselves after intermission to finish the game at 55.4 percent (31-for-56), the highest against a Division I opponent this season.
Brown finished with 16 points on 6-for-12 shooting. Vide shot 6-for-8 from the field for 13 points to go along with no turnovers.
The Lions defeated USD, 48-30, in points in the paint after making only five threes on 22 attempts.
LMU will embark on a three-game road trip beginning Wednesday at Pacific.
