LOS ANGELES — Three misplays proved costly as Washington defeated LMU 8-3 Friday night at Page Stadium, dropping the Lions to 1-4 on the season.Â
Â
All five of Washington's first three-inning runs were unearned, the product of a number of errors by the LMU defense. Â
Â
Washington's Noah Kenney made LMU's night even harder, no-hitting the Lions through five innings. LMU broke through after Kenney was lifted going into the sixth inning.Â
Â
Daniel Porras provided the decisive blow for Washington, a two-run home run to right field in the sixth off reliever Zach Bender that made it 7-0. Â
Â
LMU starter Jake Geis lasted four innings, allowing four hits and four walks. He was charged with five runs, none earned.Â
Â
The Lions finally broke through in the sixth when DJ Ghiorso doubled down the left-field line and scored on a Zach Wadas single to right, the first base hit of Wadas' LMU career.Â
Â
LMU added two runs in the eighth on a Stiveson RBI double, his first hit and first RBI as a Lion, and a Wadas sacrifice fly.Â
Â
The performance of freshmanÂ
Matt Champion offered the Lions something to build on. Champion entered in the sixth and held Washington scoreless over 3â…“ innings, surrendering just one hit while striking out three. He stranded two inherited runners and navigated Washington's lineup efficiently down the stretch, finishing with 28 strikes in 45 pitches.Â
Â
The series will continue on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m. (PT).Â
