Mhoon Provides Late-Inning Heroics in First Win of Season

LOS ANGELES — LMU rallied from a 4-2 deficit with a four-run eighth inning to defeat Tulane 6-4 Saturday afternoon at Page Stadium.

Junior right-hander Adam Behrens earned the win with 4.1 innings of outstanding relief work, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with three strikeouts. The Illinois native took over in the fifth inning and finished the game strong.

Starter Jonah Johnson gave LMU a solid foundation, throwing 4.2 innings and allowing one earned run on with two strikeouts. The senior right-hander scattered eight hits throughout the outing but did a good job keeping the Green Wave off the scoreboard.

The Lions received crucial contributions from their first-year players. Freshman second baseman Andrew Mhoon delivered the game-winning hit, a two-run single in the eighth inning that put LMU ahead for good. Mhoon finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and added a double, while making several key defensive plays at second base.

Freshman center fielder Travis Friend went 1-for-3 with a run scored, opening the third inning with a single to left field that set up LMU's first two runs.

Graduate shortstop Jaxson Wall provided the early offense with a two-run home run down the left-field line in the third inning, giving LMU a 2-0 lead. Wall's blast scored Friend, who singled to lead off the frame.

LMU turned three double plays to limit Tulane damage. Johnson got a ground ball to third with the bases loaded in the top of the second, leading to a 5-4-3 double play started by DJ Ghiorso. The Lions executed a 1-6-3 double play in the sixth inning when Behrens fielded a grounder and started the twin killing. The game-ending double play in the ninth came on a 4-6-3 combination, with Mhoon fielding the grounder at second base, flipping to shortstop Ghiorso, who completed the relay to first baseman Zach Wadas

LMU broke the game open in the eighth inning, scoring four runs to take a 6-4 lead. The rally included Mhoon's two-run single and timely hitting with runners in scoring position.

Mhoon's heroics were set up by a challenge at second base from head coach Donegal Fergus. With two outs in the eighth, Cooper Whitton was called out on a close play trying to steal second base. After a lengthy review, the call was overturned and the base was awarded. Ghiorso was hit by a pitch two pitches later, and Noah Malone dribbled a two-strike pitch to the left side that ended in an all-safe situation. Mhoon followed up with the dagger.

Tulane (1-1) collected 13 hits but left nine runners on base. LMU (1-1) managed just five hits but capitalized on scoring opportunities.

The teams conclude the three-game series Sunday at Page Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (PT).
