Lions Win Double Overtime Classic, Take Down Dons on National TV

LOS ANGELES – It took 50 minutes to decide a winner as LMU defeated San Francisco for the first time since 2021. The Saturday night double-overtime thriller finished in the Lions favor on a game-winning layup from Jalen Shelley as part of the first-year Lion's third career double-double. LMU took the game 84-82 after overcoming eight lead changes and eight tie scores.

Double overtime started with the Lions jumping ahead by five after Aaron McBride hit a corner three and Shelley followed with a layup. The Dons answered with the next five setting up Shelley's game-winning shot with five seconds left.

LMU trailed by four in the first overtime in the final seconds before Jan Vide provided a response. Vide was fouled and hit two free throws with 14 seconds on the clock to cut the deficit in half. Then, Vide and AJ Thomas teamed up to steal the ball on the inbound pass giving Vide a game-tying layup with seven seconds left. McBride forced the next period with a game-extending block, one of four blocks he had in the game.

The Lions led by as many as 10 points in the second half following a 9-0 run with 9:23 to play. McBride scored seven of the nine points in that stretch. McBride finished with 18 points, his career-high against Division I opponents, after shooting 8-for-11 from the field.

Vide hit a go-ahead three with 33 seconds left to turn a one-point deficit into a 67-65 game. USF hit two free throws to force the first overtime. San Francisco shot 20-for-25 (80 percent) from the line, while LMU was a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe for the first time this season.

LMU's only lead of the first half came on the first basket of the game. Myron "MJ" Amey Jr. hit a layup to give LMU an early 2-0 advantage.

The Dons started the game with the first eight rebounds and took a lead as large at six in the first half.

Rodney Brown Jr. hit three first half threes, including one on the final play of the half coming out of an executed timeout. Brown's ninth point of the half tied the game at 31-31 at intermission. Brown opened the second half with a go-ahead three and finished with 16 points.

The Lions only runed the ball over eight times over 50 minutes of action. LMU pounded the paint, nearly doubling up the Dons, 50-26, in paint points.

The Lions will return to play this Saturday with a road game at Santa Clara.
