SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara scored 103 points in Saturday night's win over LMU. The Broncos never trailed to defeat the Lions, 103-72, in the first matchup of the season between the two programs.
After Santa Clara scored the game's first five points,
Rodney Brown Jr. put LMU on the board with a three and
Jalen Shelley followed with a basket in the paint to tie the score at 5-all. The Broncos then responded with a 20-7 run over the next 10 minutes to build up their double-digit lead.
The Broncos shot 51 percent (18-for-35) from the floor in the first half to build up a 15-point halftime lead, 45-30.
Myron "MJ" Amey, Jr. started the second half with his second full court steal and fastbreak layup of the game. Amey scored a dozen with five rebounds and the two steals.
Santa Clara's lead grew to as large as 35 points with just over five to play.
Ten different Lions scored in the game, led by 18 points from Shelley.
Aaron McBride scored nine but accounted for four offensive rebounds. McBride and Shelley shared team-high honors with six boards apiece.
The 103 points, 37 made field goals, and 13 made threes are all highs for an opponent against LMU this season. Sash Gavalyugov scored 37 to lead the Broncos on 14 made field goals of his own.
The Lions will remain on the road and face Oregon State on Wednesday of next week before hosting Portland on January 17
th at Gersten Pavilion.
