LOS ANGELES – In a game that featured both teams shooting over 45 percent from the floor, it was Oregon State who won by one possession over LMU men's basketball. The Lions, after trailing by nine with less than eight minutes to play came within one point and had a chance to tie at the end of regulation, came up just short suffering a 72-69 loss on Thursday night.
LMU took an early double-digit lead after jumping ahead 15-5.
Aaron McBride gave the home team its first lead and points with a go-ahead three pointer two minutes into the game. Myron "MJ" Amey Jr. and
Rodney Brown Jr. each hit threes early in that stretch. McBride hit double digit scoring for the fifth time this season.
Amey hit his second three of the half and then followed with a strip steal and assist to fellow captain
Jan Vide to push the lead to 11, the largest of the game, at 20-9 with 12:05 to play in the half.
Oregon State chipped away before eventually taking the lead on a 9-0 run that turned into a 16-4 stretch towards the end of the half.
Jan Vide hit a jumper in the paint just before halftime to make it a four-point deficit at intermission, 40-36. The Beavers shot 57.1 percent (16-for-28) from the floor in the first half.
The Lions started the half with 10 of the first 13 points to retake the lead on a Brown three. Vide pushed the lead to four with 14:37 to play. Vide finished with 13 points, while Brown scored 10.
The Beavers went on a 7-0 run to retake their lead that would hold for the rest of the game.
Amey scored 14 of LMU's final 19 points over the final eight minutes to cut a nine-point deficit down to just one with 13 seconds to play. After OSU sunk a pair of free throw's Amey's final three came up just short in what would have tied the game. Amey finished with a game-high 24 points and five made threes.
Rick Issanza had two first dunks, six rebounds, a steal, and two blocks. His second block of the game was his 100
th rejection of his career. Issanza has 97 blocks while wearing an LMU uniform.
Jalen Shelley tied his career-best mark with seven assists to go-along with his eight points, four rebounds, and two steals.
The Lions only committed nine turnovers, created eight steals, and recorded 20 assists on 27 made baskets, but allowed nine made threes and 49.1 percent shooting (26-for-53) from the field from Oregon State determine the outcome. The Lions scored 21 points off Beaver turnovers.
LMU remains at home for a Saturday night contest against Santa Clara. The game will tip off at 6:00 PM from Gersten Pavilion and air on ESPN+.
