LA JOLLA, Calif.—The Lions continued their momentum on an overnight trip to UC San Diego for the Triton Invitational, competing across two days—Friday, April 4 and Saturday, April 5—at Triton Track & Field Stadium. Under clear skies and ideal racing conditions, the team came away with several personal records and strong performances.
The weekend began Friday night with the 5000 meters.
Hayden Washington (Valencia, Calif.) led the way with a strong season-best performance, clocking 17:35.77 to finish fifth overall out of 38 athletes.
Trinity Tingey (Danville, Calif.) followed in the second heat, turning in another consistent performance with a time of 19:00.37.
The rest of the Lions took to the track on Saturday, beginning with the 800 meters.
Katie Power (Mystic, Conn.) had a standout race, placing second in her heat with a massive PR of 2:24.52—dropping nearly three seconds from her lifetime best. "Katie's race was so much fun to watch," said Head Coach
Chloe Curtis. "She was aggressive at the start, moved up well, and closed with a big PR… great to see her up front, contending for the win."
In the 1500 meters, LMU athletes each raced in separate heats, a change from recent meets. All three responded with strong performances.
Rylee Guinn (Brentwood, Calif.) dropped nearly four seconds from her previous best, running 4:39.72 to place second in her heat and seventh overall out of 84 athletes. Guinn's performance puts her #17 on the LMU All-Time list for the 1500 meter distance. "Rylee made smart moves and fought hard in the final lap to claim her sixth PR of the season," Curtis said. "I'm really impressed with her poise as just a sophomore." Next up
Tessa Kline (Springfield, Mass.) clocked 4:51.00 within striking distance of her lifetime best.
Ruby Tiburcio (New York, N.Y.) rounded out the group with an excellent performance, cutting three seconds off her best time to finish in 4:55.46. Curtis had nothing but praise for the 1500 meter trio who she said "all delivered" across their respective heats."
"Our whole squad is on fire this season and I'm excited to see what we can do with these last few races coming up " The Lions return to action next at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University, April 11–13.
