LOS ANGELES – For the fourth consecutive time that LMU and Saint Mary's have played at Gersten Pavilion, it was a one-possession game in the final five seconds of play. The Lions and Gaels traded clutch three pointers in the final minute before Saint Mary's won the game, 78-73.
Rokas Jocius started the game with a dunk. After Saint Mary's took their first lead with the next two baskets, a 7-0 run LMU gave the Lions their largest lead of the game at five points.
Jalen Shelley started the run with a three and
Jan Vide and
Rodney Brown Jr. followed with back-to-back baskets.
The Lions held the lead until a 9-0 run SMC run put the Gaels on top, 22-18, with 8:51 to play in the opening half.
A Brown three put the Lions back on top by one with 4:07 to play until halftime. Brown scored a game-high 22 points and hit half of LMU's eight threes.

Aaron McBride tied the game going into intermission at 33-33. The game featured 15 tie scores and nine lead changes.
After Saint Mary's opened the second half with a made three, Myron "MJ" Amey, Jr. responded with a three of his own on LMU's first possession. The Gaels then went on a 7-0 run to build their largest lead of seven points, which they held twice in the second half.
An 11-4 run even the score back up as McBride secured his own rebound and put the ball back in for the 47-47 tie at the 13:29 mark.
Vide hit back-to-back runners in the paint to first tie then take the lead at 53-51 with 8:50 to play. Vide would hit all four LMU field goals over a six-minute stretch to put the Lions up two with 5:32 remaining. Vide finished with 14 points and 10 in the second half.
Amey showed some heroics over the final minute, hitting a pair of game-tying threes. The two teams went 5-for-5 from the field, all from three, over the final 1:16. Amey stole the ball with 53 seconds left on a baseline inbounds play and knocked down his first of back-to-back threes to tie the game at 70-all. He then responded to an SMC three with another one with 22 seconds left. The Gaels hit the game-winning three with three ticks left on the clock by Rory Hawke.
Shelley scored 13 points and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. This is the third time this season that Shelley has been perfect from the line with at lead five attempts.
Saint Mary's shot 52.7 percent (29-for-55) from the field and 50 percent (7-for-14) from three, the highest of any opponent against LMU this season. Each team only committed six turnovers apiece.
The Lions will return with a quick turnaround, hosting Pacific on Tuesday night back at Gersten Pavilion.
