LOS ANGELES – LMU men's basketball led from the jump and snapped their losing streak with a 91-57, win over North Alabama. The 34-point margin of victory matches the largest for the Lions over a Division I team in the
Stan Johnson era.
The Lions were buoyed by the nine made three from Myron "MJ" Amey Jr. The senior scored 28 points and hit over half of LMU's 16 made threes in the contest. LMU's first five made field goals came from long range as LMU built up the lead quickly to double-digits.
LMU used a 9-0 run followed by a 14-0 run to turn a four-point game at the 15-minute mark into a 25-point game less than eight minutes later.
Jan Vide hit a runner to bring the score to 33-8 at the 7:43 mark.
Jalen Shelley started another 10-0 run late in the first half with seven unanswered points. Amey capped it with his sixth three of the opening half. LMU took a 46-21 lead into the half. The 21 first half points scored are the lowest by an opponent this year against the Lions.
Shelley started the second half with the five unanswered points including a converted three-point play. Shelley recorded his second career double-double after scoring 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Shelley also went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
Rokas Jocius pushed the lead to 31-points after burying a three. Jocius earned the start and grabbed seven first half rebounds, including three on the offensive glass that led to second chance points.
Rodney Brown Jr. went on a late 5-0 run to bring the score to 87-50 entering the final four minutes of play. Brown scored 14 points including going 4-for-7 from three.
LMU's largest lead was 38, which occurred twice in the closing minutes of the game. The first time on a
Rick Issanza basket and again on a layup from
Aaron McBride coming from an Issanza assist.
The Lions shot a season-best 50 percent from three (16-for-32), with the 16 threes the second-most only to the 18 knocked down against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
LMU controlled the ball and finished with single digit turnovers for the third time this season at nine.
Defensively, LMU allowed three made threes, tying North Alabama with Eastern Washington for the fewest against the Lions this season. UNA shot 20 percent (3-for-15) from deep.
The Lions close out non-conference play on Tuesday against Morgan State. The game will tip at 3:00 PM on Dec. 23.
