LOS ANGELES – LMU held one of the nation's more prolific offenses to 67 points but could not overcome a late first half run that changed the course of the game. UC San Diego defeated the Lions, 67-57, on Tuesday night at Gersten Pavilion.
UC San Diego started the game 0-for-9 from the field and 0-for-5 from three. During that time,
Rodney Brown Jr. scored his first of five threes to push LMU ahead 6-0, their largest of the game. Brown knocked down five threes and scored 19 points, both game highs.
After the Tritons tied the score at 10-all, Myron "MJ" Amey, Jr. hit a jumper to push the Lions back up by two just before the 12-minute mark.
The first half featured seven lead changes, but it was UCSD's 13-3 run over the final four minutes of the half that flipped a two-point LMU lead into a 34-26 deficit.
The Tritons built up an 11-point lead before LMU answered with a 10-2 run to pull within a possession at 41-38 with 11:44 to play in the game. The run was capped with seven unanswered points by the home team beginning with a made basket from
Jan Vide in his first game back from injury. Vide also recorded a game-high five assists.
Rokas Jocius pulled the Lions within two, 43-41, with a made three at 11:03 in the second half.
From there UC San Diego responded a built up a double-digit lead before back-to-back threes from Brown and Amey pulled the Lions within four, 59-55 with just under five to play. Those were the last two field goals made for the Lions as the Tritons closed the game 8-2 run. Amey scored 16 points.
The Lions held UCSD to 4-for-17 from three and 9-for-19 from the free throw line, but 46 paint points and 13 offensive rebounds from the Tritons helped decide the game.
LMU returns to play on Friday against North Alabama. The game will tip off at 7:00 PM from Gersten Pavilion and air on ESPN+.
