LOS ANGELES – LMU men's basketball won their second conference game of the week on Saturday as the Lions.
LMU allowed a 30-plus point performance from another team's player for the first time this season as San Diego's Tony Duckett scored 31 in defeat, including USD's first 10 points. After each of Duckett's first three field goals LMU matched it to tie the game as
Caleb Stone-Carrawell hit a pair of shots and
Will Johnston knocked down a three to tie the game at 7-7.
The Toreros built up a six-point lead with 14 minutes showing on the first half clock before Myron Amey, Jr. went on a personal 5-0 run with back-to-back buckets to pull within one. Amey scored 17 points off the bench, his most points since opening night.
The Lions tied the score at 20-all as
Rick Issanza's dunk turned into a three-point play.
LMU followed with a 14-3 run to push ahead by nine with 4:27 to play in the half as Amey,
Alex Merkviladze, and Johnston all hit threes from range.
San Diego closed the half with a 7-2 run of their own to pull within four, 36-32.
The Toreros pulled within one twice in the first minute and a half after intermission before LMU used a 16-4 run to lead 54-41.
Jevon Porter, Stone-Carrawell, Merkviladze, and Amey all scored in that stretch of 4:38 to take a one-point lead up to 13.
The visitors answered with the next eight unanswered points to make it a two-possession game before Merkviladze spun in for a layup. Merkviladze led the Lions with 18 points.
With the game tied with less than five to play, Stone-Carrawell hit a layup to push the Lions back up two, and score his 12
th and 13
th points of the night.
San Diego would go up two after back-to-back jumpers before the Lions closed the game on a 10-1 run over the final 3:48. Merkviladze's and-1 layup pushed the Lions ahead by a point and then
Jevon Porter closed the game with four free throws to record his fourth double-double of the year at 13 points and 12 rebounds. Porter also led the Lions with four assists and three steals.
LMU finished 23-for-29 from the free throw line, both season-high marks. Merkviladze went to the line 12 times by himself, matching San Diego's team total.
The Lions will only play one game next week, away at Pacific, before returning to Los Angeles on Thursday, Jan. 30 to host Portland.
