Five-run First Propels Lions Past Dartmouth

LOS ANGELES – The Lions batted around in the first inning and plated two more in the second before holding on for a 7-5 victory over Dartmouth on Thursday night at Page Stadium.

The Lions offense clicked from the onset as leadoff man Christian Dicochea lined a double into the right center field gap to open the bottom of the first. Dicochea advanced to third on a wild pitch before JD Dunn reached on a hit by pitch. Dunn stole second and both he and Dicochea advanced on a Sam Biller infield single to open the scoring. Biller also stole second before Diego Baqueiro walked on four pitches to load the bases. After a mound visit, Daalen Adderley laced a ball through the left side of the infield to score both Dunn and Biller. Robbie Ayers returned to the lineup and had an immediate impact with an RBI single through the left side as well to score Baqueiro. Max Senesac blasted a double to the left center field gap to complete the five-run first inning.

Two more came home in the second inning courtesy of Baqueiro. Brendan Bobo singled through the middle of the infield and stole second with a wink and a smile as he avoided the tag with a nifty swim move. Baqueiro followed up with a triple off the blue monster and scored himself on a wild pitch.

That would be all the offense for the Lions as Dartmouth attempted to make a comeback.

Ryan Towers got the start for the Lions and was moderately effective through four innings of work. He allowed two earned runs through four innings of work while striking out seven.

Conner Kershaw, Seamus Barrett, Jake Geis and Jeff Heinrich combined for the final five and were nearly perfect. Kershaw threw a pair of innings, allowed no hits and got out of a mini jam in the fifth with runners on first and second. He struck out two.

Barrett allowed a baserunner on a weakly hit groundball to the pitcher. He ended up scoring, but Barrett minimized the damage and recorded one strikeout.

Geis worked a perfect eighth as he struck out the side on 14 pitches.

Heinrich came in to record his second save as a Lion with a perfect ninth. He needed only 11 pitches to get the three outs needed to close the game.

The Lions have three more against the Big Green, starting Friday, March 14 at 6:05 p.m. (PT).
